"Situational Madness"

The idea that the writer or artist has a stereotype - one of eratic behavior, addictive personality, and mood swings - scares me. Why? Because I call myself a writer. I usually say that in secret or in a whisper, but I am a writer. So am I automatically one of those who has a labeled mental disorder? Who lives a life full of drama strung together by traumatic events? Does that mean I'll live in infamy long after my demise?

You know the thought scares me as well but if you feel compelled to write, do you really have a choice? I keep coming back to the idea that if a writer feels grounded personally--ie, relationships,etc--that the situational madness or mania remains just that--a situation, a story rather than your life.

Teri --

Good way of putting it -- "a story rather than your life."

Let's face it, everything has a stereotype. Can we really worry that we fit into a cubbyhole of sameness? I for one realize that people judge me daily and if thier misjudging makes me famous for all time- at least I'll be famous for something.
